01
Lower town: an easy first orientation
Walk around Grotestraat Centrum, the Geulpoort and the riverside before your timed visit. Keep this part flexible for coffee, lunch and weather. The castle and hillside attractions are separate uphill destinations; a short distance on the map can still mean a climb.
02
Castle ruins and Fluweelengrot: one combined visit
The Fluweelengrot is visited with a guide; the regular tour takes about 50–60 minutes and finishes at the castle ruins. The ruins can also be visited separately. The operator describes the cave as wheelchair accessible and the ruins as only partly accessible. Confirm your required route with them before purchasing.
03
Gemeentegrot: check the season before choosing a tour
At the foot of the Cauberg, Gemeentegrot offers walking and cave-train tours. Choose the specific tour rather than assuming all formats run every day. On 7 October 2026 its website announced no regular tours from 1 November to 10 January during the Christmas-market period. A market ticket is a different visit, not a replacement guided tour.
04
MergelRijk: audio and creative activities
MergelRijk, at Daalhemerweg 31a, uses an audio tour and activities about marl, including making a small souvenir. It is a useful alternative when your group prefers its own pace. Check available audio languages, last admission and suitability for your party directly; Christmas presentations can change the regular experience.
05
Tickets, access and practical checks
Bring warm clothing and shoes suitable for uneven ground. Confirm tour language, accessible entrance and return route, especially when the cave tour ends uphill. Book your preferred date with the operator, then plan lunch around it. For a single day, avoid paying for three similar visits before deciding what your group actually wants.
